The button down cowl is a beginner friendly adjustable cowl, with buttons sewn on one end to allow adjustability and add a little stylish flair.
SUPPLIES
- Approximately 100 yards of Color Made Easy from Lion Brand Yarn or the Weight 5 yarn of your choice
- 6.5mm Crochet Hook
- Yarn Needle
- Scissors
- 4 Medium sized buttons
- Sewing Needle
- Thread
NOTES
- I used Color Made Easy from Lion Brand Yarns to write this pattern but any weight 5 yarn will work
- Beginning chain do not count as a stitch
ABBREVIATIONS
Most stitches in this pattern are worked in the back loop only, if you are unfamiliar with this technique, a video tutorial can be found here.
- ch – Chain
- sc – Single Crochet
- scblo – Single Crochet in Back Loop Only
- scblo2tog / scblo3tog – Single Crochet in Back Loop only 2 or 3 together
- hdc – Half Double Crochet
- hdcblo – Half Double Crochet in Back Loop Only
- dc – Double Crochet
SIZING
This cowl has buttons sewn on the tapered end which are fastened along Row 4, the buttons can be placed in any space along that row to give you a smaller or larger cowl. If you’d still like to make adjustments to the size you can add or remove rows between Rows 30 and 63.
PATTERN
Ch 25
Row 1:
- hdc in second ch from hook and each across
Ch 1, turn.
Row 2:
- hdcblo in each stitch across
Ch 1, turn.
Row 3:
- sc in each stitch across
Ch 2, turn.
Row 4:
- Skip the first stitch, dc in second stitch, dc in skipped stitch
- *skip next stitch, dc in next stitch, dc in skipped stitch*
Repeat from * to * across
Ch 1, turn.
Row 5:
- sc in each stitch across
Ch 1, turn.
Row 6 – 13:
- hdcblo in each stitch across
Ch 1, turn
Row 14:
- scblo2tog in first two stitches
- scblo in each stitch across
Ch 1, turn.
Row 15:
- scblo in each stitch across until 2 stitches remain
- scblo2tog in last two stitches
Ch 1, turn
Row 16 – 29:
Repeat Rows 14 and 15.
Row 30 – 63:
- scblo in each stitch across
Ch 1, turn.
Row 64:
- scblo2tog in the first 2 stitches
- scblo in the next 4 stitches
- scblo2tog in the last 2 stitches
Ch 1, turn.
Row 65:
- scblo in the first two stitches
- scblo2tog in the next 2 stitches
- scblo in the last 2 stitches
Ch 1, turn.
Row 66 – 79:
- scblo in each stitch across
Ch 1, turn.
Row 80:
- scblo2tog in the first 2 stitches
- scblo in the next stitch
- scblo2tog in the last 2 stitches
Ch 1, turn.
Row 81:
- Scblo3tog in all 3 of the row
Fasten off, weave in all those ends.
Sew buttons evenly spaced on narrow tail of cowl, I used 4 buttons but you can use more or less depending on the size and look you’re going for.
